Practice e​ducation guidelines & standards (PEGS)

The following provincial practice education guidelines and standards (PEGS) inform student placement policies and practices in health care settings: ​

Before placement

Student Placeme​nt Process

​​​​​​​​​​​​​Provide​s a fair, transparent and equitable provincial process and timeline for coordinating quality practice education experiences between the HCO and PSI partners.​

Orientation

Details pre-requisites, orientation, training and documentation requirements for Students, on-site Faculty and on-site PSI Personnel on practice education placements.​

Criminal R​ecord Check​

​​​Establishes criminal records check requirements and process for Students, on-site Faculty and on-site PSI Personnel participating in practice education placements.

Identification and Access Cards 

​​Specifies that students and faculty must wear clearly visible identification at all times while in the practice education setting.​

Prevention, Screening and Monitoring of Communicable Diseases

​​​Outlines the roles and responsibilities of HC​​O, PSI, students and others for communicable disease prevention, immunization, screening  and outbreak management when in an HCO setting.

R​​espiratory Protection​

​Outlines expected use of appropriate and properly fitted air purifying respirators according to WorkSafeBC Occupational Health & Safety Regulations, as applicable, in the HCO setting.

Practice Education Placements with Contractors

Establishes requirements, responsibilities and oversight for Student practice education placements with Contractors providing services within or on behalf of HCOs.

Student Accomodations

​Outlines requirements, roles and processes for identifying, inquiring about and implementing accommodations for students to support equitable participation in practice education placements.​

During placement

Consent for Student Involvement in Care

Process for obtaining, documenting and maintaining patient consent for Student participation in health care activities during practice education placements.
​​Provides guidelines on documentation by Students, including requirements for signatures, electronic documentation, record correction and privacy protections during practice education placements. 
​Defines the activities Students may perform during practice education placements, including the limits, conditions and supervision considerations. 

Student Practice Issues

​Provides a framework for identifying, addressing, documenting and supporting Student practice issues that arise during practice education experiences.

Supervision and Evaluation of Students

Provides guidance on the supervision, feedback and evaluation of Students during practice education placements.

Safety, privacy & risk

Privacy and Confidentiality
Details the requirements and responsibilities for protecting the privacy, maintaining confidentiality, and appropriately accessing, using, storing and disclosing personal and confidential information in accordance with appropriate legislation and HCO policies, procedures, and processes. Completion of Privacy & Confidentiality course is mandatory for all Students, on-site Faculty and on-site PSI personnel.

Respectful Practice Education Experiences

​​Expectations and processes for creating and maintaining respectful, inclusive and discrimination-free practice education environments, and for responding to and reporting disrespectful behavior, harassment, racism and discrimination during practice education placements. 

Safety Incident Prevention, Response and Follow-up

Outlines roles, responsibilities and actions to prevent, respond to, investigate, report and learn from safety incidents (including injuries and exposures) that may occur within an HCO practice education setting. Any safety incident involving PSI students or on-site faculty must be promptly reported to the PSI as soon as possible.

Vehicle Ride Along and Use

Establishes the licensing, insurance, authorization and safety requirements for Students participating in vehicle ride-alongs or operating vehicles during a practice education placement.

Practice considerations

Gifts, Remuneration and Reimbursement

​​​Establishes ethical and transparent standards for gifts, compensation, financial supports and reimbursements related to practice education placements.

Intellectual Property

Outlines the rights of the student and the rights of the HCO in relation to ownership, use and protection of intellectual property and student-created works developed during a practice education experience.

Labour Disruptions

​​​​Provides guidance for managing Student practice education placements during labour disruptions, outlining when placements may continue, be modified, suspended or relocated, and clarifies HCO and PSI responsibilities.
